A student working on a laptop in a wood-panelled university library

Priya Raman is a PhD researcher in Leeds studying paid and unpaid care work. Her fieldwork produced 212 interviews and roughly 190 hours of audio.

The setup

  • Recording on an iPhone 13 with a clip-on mic.

  • Speaker labels named after the first minute of each interview.

  • A folder per participant group, filled automatically after the first five.

Each evening she read the summaries, flagged quotes, and exported the transcript to her coding software with timestamps intact.

I stopped rewinding. When I needed a quote I asked for it, and it played.

The result

She finished first-pass coding in eleven weeks instead of the thirty she had budgeted, and every quote in her thesis links back to the second it was said.
